Percussion Overview

Percussion is just about our most popular instrument. Truth be told, it is one of the most difficult instruments in the band because it takes an incredible amount of focus, dedication and discipline in order to become a proficient percussionist.

Many people think that, because they like to tap on things and play rhythms all day, they would make a great percussionist.  This is not always the case! Our percussionists must be able to master instruments like snare drum, mallet instruments, timpani and accessories (cymbals, metallic instruments, etc.). Most beginning instrumentalists have to learn just one instrument - percussionists must learn many.

At  Schindewolf, students with good grades, low discipline problems, and high gross and fine motor skills will be considered for percussion. The percussion class is NOT a drum-set class.

Physical Characteristics: Students should exhibit a great deal of coordination in gross and fine motor skills, along with good critical thinking skills and a good work ethic.

Other Consideration: The study of percussion includes timpani, bells, triangle, tambourine, maracas, claves, among many other instruments.

ONLY 7-9 students will be selected for PERCUSSION

PERCUSSION PERSONALITY: Coordinated, patient, motivated, Quick to Pick-up ideas.
